Director's Report December 31, 2002

Fundraising Campaign Update: Progress was made on several fronts during December. Davidson’s Companies pledged $50,000, while numerous Board members and Commissioners signed pledges. A special committee convened via conference call on the 19th to discuss development and implementation options for the proposed Native American Heritage Program. This committee is scheduled to meet again on January 7th. The Coordinating Committee of the Campaign Partners will meet in Helena on January 29th to discuss among many other items, the revision of their Memorandum of Understanding, and to fully review the campaign’s status and 2003 strategies.

  • A considerable amount of my time (and Rita's) this month was invested on finalizing plans for the Inaugural Kick-Off event in Monticello, VA, and the January 18th Lewis & Clark in Montana Event to be held at the State Capitol.

  • Publicity Update:
    • I was interviewed for the Aging Horizons show on December 4th. Joining me was Gene Hickman representing the Lewis & Clark Honor Guard. The focus was mainly on the upcoming “kick-off” events. Shows will air statewide beginning January 14th.
    • On December 12th I was interviewed for a Face the State segment to be shown on ABC affiliates on Sunday, January 12th. Again the main focus was on the January 18th “kick-off” events.
    • Contacts were made with the Montana PBS station for a statewide TV airing of Lewis & Clark; Montana’s Story. This is the 22-minute video co-produced with the state Commission, MSU Communication Services, and the Montana SuperHost program. The show will most likely not air until March 2003.
    • Plans are moving forward for the creation of an electronic Press Kit for “Montana Bicentennial News.” This is a partnership with Travel Montana and the Montana Historical Society. The new Press Kits will be available to the media during Monticello’s Inaugural Event in January.
    • Plans are also being made to launch a statewide PR/Publicity program in early 2003 in an effort to better inform Montanans about L&C events and planning.

  • On December 8th I traveled to Fairmont Hot Springs to address high school DECA students. These students were looking to research career opportunities. I joined a very diverse group of presenters offering different options.

  • Also during December I continued to work on structuring a “Finance” track for the National Lewis & Clark Conference to be held in Great Falls on April 14-16, 2003. The state Commission is a co-sponsor of this upcoming conference.

  • On December 20-21, 2002, I, and about 500 other Carroll College fans, traveled to Savannah, TN to see the Fighting Saints play for the NAIA national football title. The Saints won!! (I looked, but I couldn’t see that Lewis & Clark spent much time on the Tennessee River?!)

  • Sandwiched in with the Christmas and New Years Holidays, my month concluded as I scored 52 project grant applications which were submitted for funding consideration for the state Commission’s 2003 grant program. Final scoring will be completed by the scoring committee, and a slate of proposed grantees will be announced at the state Commission’s February 11th meeting in Helena.
