Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Commission
May 17, 2000
This following brief report is intended as a supplement to the statement of purpose created by the Symposium Subcommittee of the Education Committee of the Montana Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission: A Confluence of Cultures: Native Americans and the Expedition of Lewis and Clark. While the statement of purpose distills the work that was accomplished during our meeting of May 17, 2000, this brief report addresses future actions of the Symposium Subcommittee.
Since one of the main intents of the Subcommittee is to encourage Lewis-and-Clark- related scholarship by Native Americans, Darrell Kipp will soon send letters to appropriate contacts at each of the 30 American tribal colleges, attempting to discover those Indian scholars interested in researching/addressing the topics outlined in A Confluence of Cultures. The Subcommittee needs to develop a clear understanding of the commitment of Native American scholars to Expedition-related topics before we can take our next steps in planning the symposium. Once these interests and commitments are clearly understood, we will be able to approach non-Indian scholars concerning the topics outlined in A Confluence of Cultures. The results of these inquiries will help the Subcommittee to understand the sort of symposium we might be able to organize. Armed with this knowledge, we will be prepared to do the further organizational work necessary to staging a successful symposium, beginning with a well-considered appeal to funding entities likely to support such an endeavor.
