June 25, 2003
A membership quorum was not present; an executive session was then called to order.
Our in-kind support document needs to be kept up to date and include speakers, and talks to groups such as this week's Winnebago group.
We need to understand the latest status of Corp II. Dick to contact the state Commission and find out what’s going on.
The major discussion of the evening focused on signage – particularly the signage from Ulm - south of Great Falls - to about Wheat Montana near Three Forks. As Cheryl pointed out the Upper Missouri Group is working everything from Fort Benton to Great Falls, after this point it is up to our groups to fill in the gap to Three Forks. The affected organizations are the Reaching the Rockies Chapter, our Commission (including the GOM Chapter), and the Crimson Bluffs Chapter. Once past the Great Falls the L&C expedition experienced a transition from an open prairie eco system to the mountains, that was a completely different eco system and focus – once in the mountains they knew they had to make contact with the Shoshone and obtain horses. This is the signage emphasis that we need to implement. How we do this is the next question. It will take money (grants) and coordination between the groups. We might consider one grant application for this region. Ann Tedesco, from our Commission, has put together a list of signage. Cheryl has a list from her group. We believe that the Crimson Bluffs Chapter has its list. We all need to sit down and determine how we get the whole story out. This coordination effort needs to be done in an open forum so we’re not stepping on toes. We might consider a joint meeting sometime. Recommendation is to have Marv Holtz coordinate the Reaching the Rockies signage with Ann and have them both coordinate with Crimson Bluffs (Rose Oleson?).
GN Town Center Project: Need to get together on grant for Educational Components for this project. Meeting set up for Tuesday, July 1, 10AM, Forest Service Office. Dick will send out meeting notice.
GN Town Center Project: Need to send letter to Devil’s Elbow Interpretive Designer requesting information that is needed for our decision to possibly use them also for this project. Concerns are the size of their organization, their comfort level with the GN project, and do they feel they are the right people for this project. There’s no argument that their organization is correct for the Devil’s Elbow project – there’s just questions as to the size of the GN project and the possible impact on their small organization.
GN Town Center Project: City of Helena is preparing RFP for an Architect. Need to get Marv Holtz in on this process because of his experience.
Our Open House, for 2005 BIG PARTY suggestions, will be July 15, 2003, 4:30PM to 8 PM. Amy has a handout and a press release available. Dick will coordinate this with Channel 12. All of us need to get the word out to whomever we see may be interested.
Comment from Cheryl: She has been working with the Upper Missouri group and they are interested about getting with the L&C County Commission and comparing notes as to what we’re planning. We should do this after our July 15th meeting. Might consider inviting them to our Sept. meeting.
Comment from Marv: the Upper Missouri group is concerned about RV facilities to support the 2005 Signature Event. We should be aware of this and do some coordination in this area in support of our event.
FYI: Dick & Kathy Alberts will host the August Commission meeting at their house in Eldorado Heights. Details later.
Next meeting July 23, 2003.
Dick Alberts, 6/26/03
